Kanturk Intermediate footballers were made battle all the way to the end by a dogged Ballydesmond side in their Cork county IFC first round tie played at Newmarket on Wednesday 6th May.
Kanturk opened the scoring through an Ian Walsh point in the first minute but Ballydesmond took control and raced into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead.
Kanturk battled back with points through Ian Walsh and centre back Alan Sheehy levelled the scores before an injury time goal from Ian Walsh gave Kanturk a 1-6 to 0-6 interval lead.
The second half exchanges were close all through and while Kanturk had goal chances, they didn't capitalize on them and had the greater wide's tally  of 11 to Ballydesmond's 5 over the hour. Entering the closing stages Kanturk were three points to the good but Ballydesmond battled back to within a point but time ran out on their hopes of taking the game to injury time and Kanturk held on for a 1-09 to 0-11 victory and a place in round 4. Ballydesmond face Millstreet in round 2 and will be hoping the injured Cork star Donnacha O Connor can recover from injury on time.
