Making their Cork Premier Intermediate Hurling championship debut, Kanturk went the extra mile as they were taken to extra time by Blarney before victory was secured in their 1st round tie at Mallow played in glorious sunshine on a balmy evening on Monday 23rd June.
It was a close contest with Kanturk holing an interval lead of 0-11 to 0-9. On the resumption Blarney upped their game and five unanswered points saw them race into an 0-11 to 0-14 lead after 10 minutes of the second half. Kanturk responed and even with some missed opportunities were level 14 points each after 22 second half minutes.
In the remaining 8 minutes the sides could not be separated and they finised level on a 17 point each score line to take the tie to extra time.
Two minutes into the opening half of extra time Kanturk got the major breakthrough when Willie Murphy set up Lorcain McLoughlin to goal and even though Blarney pegged two points back, Kanturk grew in confidence and went in at the short whistle 1-19 to 0-20 ahead.
In the second period of extra time with Blarney fighting to get the scores to bring them back into the game Dual Cork star Aidan Walsh reached to the heavens to pluck a ball out of the sky and launched a monstrous delivery from deep in his own defence and point to break Blarney hearts and supporters from both sides rose to their feet in applause.
This score sent Kanturk on their way to a 1-24 to 0-22 victory and round 4 of championship 2014.
