Intermediate Championship Preview

Kanturk Intermediate footballers make their championship debut on Sunday 13th May at Ballingeary when Castletownbere provide the oppossition with a 2.30pm start. In truth this is a most difficult tie for Kanturk as the Beara side were defeated in last years county final in this grade and will be hoping to go one better this year. Castletownbere are spearheaded by Andrew O' Sullivan who captained Cork U21 footballers to Munster and All-Ireland success in 2007 and spent the following two years involved with Cork Senior Footballers along with capturing Munster and All-Ireland honours at Junior level with Cork. Indeed there is a ''Kanturk'' connection with O' Sullivan as his mother, Mary, is daughter of Geraldine and the late Andrew Kenneally, and her brothers John and Francis are both very involved with the Kanturk club with John's son of the same name likely to line out in goal for Kanturk on Sunday next.
Kanturk will be looking to Cork senior Aidan Walsh to spearhead their challenge and will be hoping they can capture some of the flair shown on their successful run to Cork County Junior football championship honours last year.
For the history books, Kanturk competed in the county intermediate championship from 1965 to 1970 inclusive with little success. The Cork Intermediate Football championship was not held in 1963 or 1964 due to lack of entries and after some clubs were regraded from senior for the 1965 season, others like Kanturk were admitted to the grade. In 1965 Kanturk played Urhan in the opening round. In fact one must go back to 1910 when Kanturk's decision to  regrade from senior to Intermediate proved a master stroke as they went on to win the county championship by defeating C.Y.M.S. in the final played at Fermoy on 5th September by 3-04 to 0-01.
